Every Frame a Painting was a series of video essays about film form, made from April 2014 to September 2016, by Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou.
We officially announced the end of the channel in December 2017. Nothing sinister, we just felt it was time. This post explains it all:

Joel & Ethan Coen - Shot | Reverse Shot
Переглядів 3,8 млн8 років тому
How do you film a conversation? Most likely, you’re going to block the actors, set up the camera, and do shot/reverse shot. But where do you put the camera? What lens do you use? And how do you cut back and forth? Today, I consider the Coen brothers - Joel & Ethan - and see how these choices lend a particular feel to their version of shot/reverse shot. For educational purposes only. You can don...
Memories of Murder (2003) - Ensemble Staging
Переглядів 1,7 млн8 років тому
How do you emphasize to the audience that something is important? Well, you could always cut to a close-up, but how about something subtler? Today I consider ensemble staging - a style of filmmaking that directs the audience exactly where to look, without ever seeming to do so at all. NO SPOILERS. Eight Ways to Get the Audience to Look at a Character: 1) Let Them Speak 2) Make Them Brighter or ...
Vancouver Never Plays Itself
Переглядів 2,1 млн8 років тому
Perhaps no other city has been as thoroughly hidden from modern filmmaking as Vancouver, my hometown. Today, it’s the third biggest film production city in North America, behind Los Angeles and New York. And yet for all the movies and TV shows that are shot there, we hardly ever see the city itself. So today, let’s focus less on the movies and more on the city in the background. Press the CC bu...

Drive (2011) - The Quadrant System

One of the many pleasures of Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” (2011) is that the shots feel both tightly composed and weirdly unpredictable. Even though most of the images follow a simple quadrant system, Refn puts plenty of subtle touches within the frame. Let’s take a look. For educational purposes only. I still enjoyed those movies without doing all that extra stuff. Some directors styles in certain genres don't have to be copied.
This guy and Chaplin were like living cartoons..seemed invincible
I would’ve enjoyed it if it had been for the surge mouth!
I am tired of pretending I hate Michael Bay. If I had a chance to make movies, they’d probably end up similar (maybe less sexism and objectification but that’s it.)
This is exactly the scene and the information I was looking for. Very well done. My questions stemmed from why is she slightly off camera and he is directly looking into. The play on this slight difference throughout the whole movie is so interesting.
I don't understand but I guess the first guys are just paid. Literally they can sang the Avengers theme only🤦🏻♂️ how can't they not remember that. At least tge mcu logo bgm.
Edgar Wright seems to understand the magical connection between theatre and film. Born through the love of comics. Inspirational
Great video thanks very much!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
8:06 Wow, that one was terrible. They didn't even hit the window, they just broke through the edge like it was nothing.
Name movie?
2009 comedy movies were just them going to high school ☠️
That is a very interesting take on Kurosawa's film making. And I mean that as interesting, not that I disagree with any of it. I guess I haven't studied film at that level. I just really like Kurosawa's films. I've watched five or six of them, I just figured he was a master of his craft, and had some great actors to work with as well.
missing this channel so much. hope the team is doing well
It's amazing how much you can learn in 3 minutes of watching this channel.
This is so great! Thank you!
Who else but Michael Bay?
Buster was an absolute dude.
I love Ohio
if the movie or art is unispired the accompanying music will probably be also....there is sameness to marvel which is good in some ways but also pretty bad in others....just thinking about danny elfman he has such an iconic sound even when he ventured into superhero movies like the early batman movies they were inspired and had a style out of tim burton's crazy mind and less about trying to fit an overall cinematic universe and the music reflected that I can go back to those scores however very few if any marvel movies do I find to be worth revisting maybe spiderman 2....the avengers theme is cool but for the most part as generic as one can get.
So retro and inventive..wow. Roddy mc dowall loved him..😀😀🌹🌹♥️♥️
Danmm This Shit Is Great Thanks For The Video Man
Before all the quick edits and memes. These were the real og
Goal of comedy is to get laughs, over-stylizing and over-directing oftentimes accomplishes the opposite.
WTF are you doing? You have fucking 2 million subscribers and millions of views per video. Make another fucking video. Put in a sponsorship, it is worth the effort, over whatever shitty studio is fucking you over right now.
absolutely fascinating. i fully agree with your final conclusion (as i understand it) that Mavels biggest problem is that it is too safe. art cannot be safe. art is supposed to be daring.
I ended up watching Keaton films on UA-cam until nearly 4am after seeing this blasted video!! Including Cops, featured prominently in this vid. Another excellent examination of the art of film, sir. By the way, does anyone know how he got that Train-to-Keaton-CU in your opening shot?? I'm racking my brain trying to figure that one out -
Wow!
Please please release more videos these videos aren't just for films students or cinephiles, you are literally teaching film study and technique. I implore you a thousand times over to release more content as your videos will inspire the next generations of filmmakers. Tony, you are one of the greatest film channels to ever exist.

Un master de los máster Unico inigualable ❤ De Argentina 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
such a brilliant man.
I can still produce that "spiderman" too.
Stole your name from Andrew Laszlo. Every Frame a Rembrandt. Shame.
I don't know why everyone hates Michael Bay's movies. i like Michael Bay and the movies he directed.
It's true. Orson Welles was the first UA-camr.
When you find more jokes in single wine than in the whole movie. Than Yes, it's freaking sad. And no Steven Segment with his money laundering movies and slapy fight scenes will not make it better
Where are you?
Japanese animations have remarkable musics that create strong bonds with the audience
And they’ve never relied on temp scores even once, they just get composers for their own actual styles.
😮
7:50 when hes running ftom the bouldrrs rolling down the hill, whats the name of that movie?
The only Marvel music wich give you emotion is from Black Panther performed by Ludwig Goransson ! is the one I remember and I listened
BUSTER KEATON was and is the greatest action / comedy movie star and stuntman in the first 60 years of Cinema History.
I was just linking this to someone and wound up watching the whole ep again. This is my favorite one I'm pretty sure. Marvel Cinematic Music probably 2nd.
Regardless of what we think of this guy, Michael Bay (and his friend Jerry Bruckheimer) have managed to generate some of the biggest multi-million dollar profits the Hollywood industry has ever seen. And they also have achieved their specific group of fans who are tolerant of the ridiculous action and everything that is in their movies, among which I include myself
How to be a CCP agent
Still the best movie channel
Is it possible that, for the 'not showing the hit' it's because they STOPPED right before the real hit?
3:43 gee, does this remind anyone else of anybody?
That’s why Joss’ shows are so great. He hates “radio with pictures”. I know his shows aren’t strictly comedy, but there’s comedy in there, and it works really well. So do all the other genres when it’s not just “over shoulder” back and forth 100x Oh and I also realized why he does it right when I like dry British humour; he went to boarding school in England :)
